What Marginalia is.

Marginalia is a literary journal for serious readers. Not a book-discovery platform. Not a review aggregator. A place for considered writing about books — what they do, why they matter, and what it means to read them carefully.

The name refers to the notes readers make in margins: the private conversation between reader and text, the place where a book becomes genuinely yours. We are interested in that conversation — in reading as an active, interpretive act rather than passive consumption.

What we publish

Full reviews of novels, story collections, and works of nonfiction — written at length, by readers who have thought carefully about what they are reviewing. Essays on reading, on literary form, on the relationship between books and the lives lived around them. Reading guides for writers who feel intimidating. Lists that are curated, not algorithmic.

What we don't do

We don't accept publisher review copies in exchange for coverage. We don't publish sponsored content. We don't score books on a 100-point scale or attempt to rank literature competitively. A five-star rating here means something different from five stars on a retail site — it means a book worth your time and attention.
